Everyone knows the importance of having a website. For any business to flourish, it has to have a strong web presence on the internet.

Your website design has to be such that it captures visitors' attention and make them stay longer. Here are some important 10 tips by which you can improve your website design.

Ten Tips For Design Website

  • Keep Your Pages Fast-Loading
Web users are impatient. Don't force visitors to wait through JavaScript-enabled introductions or QuickTime movies before they can enter your site. Always provide a "Skip" or "Stop" button when using these elements.
  • Avoid Dead-End Pages
Always offer your customers a way out of a page. This could mean including a link to the main page on every page. Users are becoming increasingly accustomed to a navigation bar that links to all the sections of a site, and company logos that act as a navigation link to the home page. You can also offer text links on each page for going to "Top of page" or "Back."
  • Facilitate Scanning
Study after study shows that most people don't read on the Web. They scan content for information that is relevant. Facilitate this process by breaking up text with headings and subheadings. Use text links that allow readers to jump from section to section. Don't expect people to scroll to find information on your site.
  • Avoid Overusing Graphics, Animation, and Multimedia
If they don't add functionality, don't use graphics, animation, movies, sounds, and so on. Only use these features if they enhance your customers' experience. Product photos are often valuable additions to your site, but you might want to minimize the delays they could cause in load times by using thumbnail (small) images. You can link these thumbnail images to larger, more detailed images for customers who are interested in having a closer look. You can even include technology that allows viewers to zoom in on features or rotate the view of the product. Limit the number of images on each page for faster load times. If pages or files will take some time to download, it's best to forewarn your customers by noting the file size next to the link to them. If anything, users have less patience for state-of-the-art technology these days as the Web becomes dominated by new users, and the upgrade speeds for new browsers and plug-ins decline.
  • Don't Assume That Everyone Uses the Same Browser
Avoid designing for a certain browser or trying to force a certain look. Some Web authors make extensive use of elaborate formatting tricks in a determined effort to coerce a client program into creating a specific visual rendering. These pages look good when viewed with the author's browser of choice, but look bad in most or all other browsers.
  • Provide a Text Option
Browser preferences allow users to turn off graphics if they choose, and those who are using older browsers may not have the ability to view all images. So provide text links or alternative text tags in addition to graphics, including navigational buttons or bars.
  • Delay Registration
There are many reasons for asking visitors to register at your Web site, but don't put your registration form on the first page. Show your content first; demonstrate that registration has its rewards before you ask visitors to spend their time on it.
  • Make Your Forms Flexible
Online forms are often necessary and useful for placing an order or setting up accounts. But try to make your forms flexible by limiting the number of required fields. Also, make errors easy to find and correct. If users have incorrectly entered a phone number, they shouldn't need to complete the entire form again. Just have them correct the portion with the error, which should be highlighted to make the mistake obvious. Include a "Help" link in case customers run into problems while filling out a form. It's just not worthwhile to people to take time to figure out how to make something work on your site when there are 5 million other sites to visit.
  • Avoid "Under Construction" Signs
By definition, Web documents change over time. Either your pages are useful to people (in which case you need not apologize for them) or they're not - in which case, you aren't ready to show them to the world and shouldn't be making them public.
  • Provide a Clear Path for Customers to Make a Purchase
Display your products, descriptions, and prices prominently. If you're going to talk about a product your company sells, explain how to order it. Many Web sites are guilty of not fully disclosing product and pricing information or making it clear how to buy their products. Even if you are not yet prepared to process transactions online, you can let customers know how to buy your products by including a telephone number or retail location where they can complete a purchase, or a date when the product will become available online.

One common question I get, is how a website job should be planned and executed – what are the steps?

The following is a quick outline of the process that I have been using for years with good success – at least most of the time.

* Figure out what the focus of the website will be.

* What specific features do you want in the website.

* Create a list of sections for your website and give them a hierarchy of importance.

* Write out your content and finalize it.

* Find a style / look that meets your website’s and your industry’s requirements.

* Build the website.

* Evaluate the website and make the required changes / updates.

* Go live – register a domain, find a host, upload the website.

1. THE FOCUS OF THE WEBSITE

This is the first thing you want to define clearly before any other step is taken. You need to decide what the main purpose of the website is - what you want to focus on in terms of a subject.

It is important that you define this step as clearly as possible because a website’s focus has a major impact on the whole project; this is the ‘foundation’ of the site.

For example:

* A web store.

* Information hub for established clients.

* Branding website.

2. SPECIFIC WEBSITE FEATURES

This builds off of the first step, where now you look at actual features that you need to implement. For example:

* A shopping cart for an online store

* A password protected section of the website

Again, the more detail the better.

3. MAP OUT THE MAJOR SECTIONS OF THE WEBSITE

With the first two steps completed, you’re ready to actually start mapping out the major sections of the website; drawing out quick diagrams of the website is a useful way of doing this.

A diagram can easily show the hierarchy of a website and how the various sections are related to each other.

4. WRITE OUT YOUR FINAL CONTENT

This part is usually left to the end … then people wonder why they have to go back and rethink the structure of the site.

All websites are driven by content; it’s the content that makes a site effective and successful. As such, this part of the process is arguably the most important, so you need to pay attention to it.

5. FIND A STYLE / LOOK FOR THE WEBSITE

At this stage of the process, you are ready to start looking at the visual aspect of the site – the design. You have a few options:

* Hire a graphic designer / web designer

* Come up with your own design – I’m assuming you have some artistic and design experience.

* Buy yourself a website template and save time and money.

6. BUILD THE WEBSITE

Yes, I know it seems impossible but you can finally start building the actual site at this point!

With the above questions answered and steps completed, you’ll find the process of building the website (actually writing out the code,) is much easier and you will have reduced the chance of having to go back and redo things.

7. EVALUATE THE WEBSITE, MAKE THE REQUIRED CHANGES / UPDATES

Once you've built the website, you should walk away from it for a day or two. This will allow you to come back and evaluate it with fresh eyes. It might also be a good idea to get someone who has not worked on the site, to take a look as well.

Here are some of the things you should be looking for:

* Clean easy to update design/structure.

* Good usability in the design - and all that implies.

* Fast loading 'light' pages.

* Intelligent use of technology - using Flash when it makes sense not because you want a 'cool' intro!

* The website’s ability to convey the meaning/message of the website quickly if not instantly.

8. GO LIVE – REGISTER A DOMAIN, FIND A HOST, UPLOAD THE WEBSITE.

If you’ve passed steps 1 to 7, you know you're ready to show the world the website. All that is left to do is go live:

* Register a domain

* Find a hosting company

* Upload the website

NOTE: You could actually register the domain and find a hosting company after you’ve completed the first 4 steps. Sometimes it makes sense to register your domain name before you design the website; this is because you may want to integrate the domain name into the design.

CONCLUSION

If you follow these steps, and not let pressures from your clients (or anything else) sway you, you’ll find yourself working more quickly and under less stress, while delivering a better website for your client – everyone wins

Thanks!

Listed below are 10 optimization tips that will help improve your web sites search engine rankings.

1. Defined site architecture and design issues
Web sites that are built using the following technologies (Flash, Frames) often find it harder to rank well. This is because search engine spiders often have difficulty in navigating or indexing these pages. Obviously the best solution would be to avoid using the above, but sometimes, it is just not practical to apply, here are some workaround solutions.

Sites utilizing Flash technology
Avoid building sites that are completely developed in Flash. If this is not possible, create a HTML version that the search engine bots can easily spider and index. Another compromise would be to develop certain elements in Flash (e.g. banners and menus) while keeping the text content in HTML.

Sites utilizing frames
Web sites that use frames often have only a singular visible URL. Irregardless of how many different pages of content the visitor sees, the search engine bot only recognizes one page (usually the homepage). This runs the risk of all your interior pages never getting indexed properly or cached. The best solution would be to break the site out of its framing code. Alternatively, you could insert a tag and insert your keyword rich content in between.

2. Sites utilizing dynamic URLs
There are many high page count sites that utilize a version of session ids and dynamic URLs. Most notably e-commerce sites. Search engine bots often have difficulties indexing these pages, especially if the session id string is very long. Implement a mod rewrite to enable your URLs to be more search engine friendly. Write keywords in the URLs to give your web page a rankings boost. For example, http://www.yourdomain.com/store/red-widgets.html

3. Implement a sitemap
This tip pertains mostly to web sites that use javascript, image links or maps for its navigation. While the visitor is able to read the links and browse each page without problem, the search engine bot does not read or will ignore such code. By implementing a text link sitemap that links to every page, you are providing the bots with a means to traverse to each page without problems. Placing a text link to the sitemap on your homepage ensures that every page is only 2 clicks away from the root homepage.

4. Keyword research
Many times, a webmaster will wonder why his site gets very little targeted, on-topic traffic. By performing a proper keyword research, you can then know exactly what your targeted audience is typing in and searching for. Choosing the right keywords is essential as it will be used throughout the optimization process. Some great tools for keyword study include KeywordDiscovery.com Keyword Research Tool, Wordtracker and Overture's KW Tool.

5. Avoid converting text to images.
Search engine bots do not read textual content in the manner humans do. All they "see" in the code is an image. Forget about using Bookman Old Style and stick with Arial or Verdana. This compromise ensures your keyword rich content is not put to waste.

6. Write keyword rich content
After you have researched and developed a set of keywords, it is time to put that to good use. Write and publish good original content with those keywords placed throughout your document. Do not overdo this as you may be penalized for keyword spamming.

Web sites with good original content usually rank well and you should aim for that. DO NOT copy and paste content from a different site. You will be penalized with duplicate content, and as a result, your web page will never rank well.

7. Title tag
By far, one of the most important components of on site optimization is the title tag. Use the proper keywords in the title tag. (Do not stuff keywords). Keep the character count below 65 for optimal results. If you have a site that sells Red Widgets, an example of an optimized title tag would be "Red Widgets For Sale"

8. Meta and Alt tags
Alot has been said in recent times about the importance of description and keyword meta tags. While Google does not read keyword meta tags anymore, you should still write out short, effective and simple description tags as they do show up in your rankings site description. Keyword meta tags are still read by the smaller search engines, so it is a safe bet to insert a few keywords here.

Be sure to label each image on your web page with Alt tags whenever possible. As always, avoid keyword stuffing or spamming.

9. One way, reciprocal and internal links
Using your desired keyword in the anchor text is by far the best method of increasing your ranking. There are many advanced methods of getting links, which I will cover in a future article, but for now, try exchanging links with other similar on topic family friendly and high quality web sites, (be sure that these sites are not spam sites!) or insert links in your internal web pages that point to one another using the page specific keyword.

10. Don't overdo it!
So you have implemented some of the tips described above and are starting to see movement in your rankings. That's great news, but do not overdo it thinking that more is better. At some point, you will trip the over optimization filter and your site will be flagged and penalized. Moderation is key in SEO.

Our final bit of advice is to keep writing original keyword rich content and source out inbound hyperlinks to give your web site the best chance of rankings success!

Just possessing a website and leaving it without any maintenance or addition of new content makes it boring and low on search engine ranking results.

In order to keep your website looking attractive and fresh certain details have to be taken care of on regular basis. Addition of latest news on your site makes it communicative in nature to the customers and keeps them informed about latest happenings in your company.

It creates the impression that the site is maintained properly informing visitors about latest news which in turn builds up trust and positive attitude. You can add information regarding any topic maybe your company’s achievements, launch of new products/services/promotional offers, tips, awards, etc. News plays important role in raising the sales, as before you have posted news about your product/service many potential customers did not knew about it. In news write-up, link the target keywords to the relevant web pages, so that readers can easily land on the other web pages easily. This is good from SEO point of view also, when you get more links - volume of traffic also increases.

Keep the testimonials section up-to-date, whenever you receive any new positive feedback from your customer, add it to your testimonial section. It can be short or lengthy, whatever size, the customer opinion is, and it holds much significance. Potential customers would always prefer to read your present clients’ views and experiences before making any decision. It helps in procuring trust of people and also increases sales level.

Placing monthly or seasonal promotional offers or discounts leaves an impression that your website is updated regularly and adds something new to create interest in the customers. For instance- Monsoon sale, December end offers, etc type promotional offers can be posted online. But remember to remove them from your site when the time period of its validity is over. Such seasonal or monthly offers makes your customers think that if they want to avail the offers which are available only for a limited time period, they have to act fast. During the special offer time you can even alter your logo slightly or add any new graphics to create interest and appeal. For this help of a website designer can be taken.

Blogging is dynamic like the news section, here there is scope of communication between you and your customers. Visitors can post their feedback and comments online. You can even post in informative or interesting articles. Update this section regularly to create a personality of your online business among the net users.
